Pilots stop over on way to Tokyo to 'remake history'

Italian team receives warm welcome, gifts at Sharjah airport

"I am romantic, I love Italy and I wanted to do the same trip that Arturo Ferrarin undertook in 1920," said an excited Captain Antonello Fillppone after touching down at the Sharjah Airport in a SIAI-Marchetti S-250.

He was part of the five-member pilot team that set out from Rome on July 23 in two similar aircraft and are to reach Tokyo on Aug.10, a route similar to the one that Ferrarin undertook 81 years ago.

A pilot on a Boeing 747, the small aircraft may have been uncomfortable but the spirit of adventure has led him on.

"We have no relaxation, no air-conditioning and just a bottle of water. But we are enjoying ourselves and are confident that we will reach our destination in time," he said.

The team was scheduled to reach Sharjah on July 26, but technical problems meant that they had to spend four extra days in Riyadh. Due to this, their scheduled three-day stop in Sharjah had to be cut down to just an overnight stay. They leave for Karachi on Tuesday morning.

"We had a technical problem and needed a spare part that had to be flown in from Rome which took two days. Another day went to fix it. Being a small plane, we are unable to carry too many spare parts," he said.

Leading the team is Captain Riccardo Filippi who is the founder of an Aero club in Rome named Trasvolare which literally means making long flights. For the adventurous pilot, this is his second visit to Sharjah. He earlier piloted a two-seater plane from Rome to Wellington in 1998. "During my earlier visit, I had the good fortune of landing in Sharjah. The friendly people, the warmth and the general cordial atmosphere had created a lasting impression on me. When I planned this flight, there was no way I could have excluded Sharjah from my plan. I maintained the same route till Thailand," he said.

All through the flight from Riyadh to Sharjah, he maintained a steady chatter with his colleagues on how beautiful Sharjah was. "I told them they should expect a warm reception. They did not take me seriously and now they realise what I said was true. It's a pleasure to be back in Sharjah," he said.

Unfortunately for the "little tired" Filippi, during his first visit to Sharjah, he was unable to spend much time and so decided to allot more time during this visit. "But this time too it is the same tale. I will come back again. Maybe I will be third time lucky," he said.

The delay, he said, would not hamper their onward progress and the journey would continue as scheduled. The team has been working with the embassies at the destinations where they will stop to ensure that the air rights were still unchanged.

The weather conditions were not entirely favorable. The team had to leave their destinations before sunrise at most of the places, which meant waking up at three in the morning and gearing up for a tiring flight. However, under all these circumstances, their spirits have not waned. Instead they have grown stronger.

"It's been a nice flight so far. Lots of deserts and lots of sea. Delays happen but we have to keep safety as our first priority," said Paolo Zecchini.

Earlier, the two aircraft - one painted in Italian color and the other painted in Grey and white - made a perfect landing at the Sharjah International Airport.

They were received at the tarmac by Mohammed Al Hajri, director-general of civil aviation, Sharjah, Aldo Volini, consul of Italy in Dubai, Italian defence attache and other airport and Italian embassy officials.

"As we are dealing with aircraft, the size of them does not matter," said Hajri. He said the airport was keen to assist such flights through the embassies.

"When the Italian embassy approached us, we were most willing to help. We are glad that the pilots are here and we hope they enjoy themselves in the UAE especially in Sharjah. Such flights are good means of publicity for the UAE, especially Sharjah," he said.

He lauded the mission undertaken by the pilots who showed that "even with a small type of aircraft, they can bring the world together."

Expressing happiness at the stopover, Volini said the spirit of passion and adventure that brought them to the emirate.

"It's not easy to cover 16,000 kilometers in little planes. The pilots have shown the world the Italian spirit that moves within them," he said.

A memento was presented to Hajri by Filippi on behalf of the Air Rally Roma team. The pilots were given gifts by the airport.
