The Department of Civil Aviation, Sharjah, has officially announced the redevelopment and expansion of Sharjah International Airport (SAA).
According to Director General for Sharjah International Airport and the DCA, Dr. Ghanem Al Hajri, the new facilities would enable the airport to cater to eight million passengers when completed. The expansion will be undertaken without affecting operations, he said.
The 18-month project that took off in January will be executed by the Bin Laden Group and will be financed by Abu Dhabi Commercial Bank. The space and facilities at the airport is set to expand by almost four times. Once completed, the airport also will feature a new check-in area, departure and arrival lounges, a bigger duty free area, coffee shops and food court, seating area as well as prayer areas for males and females.
The number of airline offices will increase from 16 to 40 and the check-in counter will increase to 40 in addition to one VIP and one oversize counter.
The passport control gates for both departure and arrivals will be taken to 16 each plus an electronic gate each. Visa counters will be increased by four to 10 and three new aerobridges will be constructed and the existing three will be replaced.
The airport will have parking facilities for 800 vehicles.
