Mock emergency drill at Sharjah airport

By a staff reporter

SHARJAH – The Sharjah Airport Authority in coordination with the Sharjah Police carried out a drill at the Sharjah airport yesterday to deal with an emergency supposedly caused by skidding of a flight which was carrying 80 passengers and crew members.

Several organizations, including the police and army officials, medical rescue terms, and personnel from the Ministry of Interior, Sharjah civil aviation department and civil defence took part in the mock exercise.

The drill started at 10am. The mock drill involved an aircraft which aborted take-off after the pilot

noticed vibration at maximum speed and saw smoke in the left side of the wing. The flight skidded and hit the cement barrier of the service road at the airport. The casualties included 10 deaths, 25 seriously injured and 40 passengers with minor injuries. Five passengers escaped unhurt.

The Anjad patrol and civil defence squads rushed to the site of the accident and evacuated the airport and cordoned off the area. The civil defence put out the fire in the front of the aircraft and evacuated the passengers. The injured were rushed to the hospital after first aid.
